Hot on the heels of 2018’s breakout music movie success Bohemain Rhapsody, the trailer for the Elton John biopic Rocketman taps a big fat seam of pure nostalgia.
Starring Taron Egerton in the lead role, the trailer shuttles back and forth between moments in Elton’s life, from his days as a “fat boy from nowhere” (the script’s phrase, not this author’s), to the gaudy excesses of his performing peak, together with the inevitable nods towards his homosexuality (subtle) and drug use (more overt).
Elton’s 1970 hit Your Song provides the soundtrack to the trailer, its nostalgia value having already been comprehensively tested by its deployment in the movie Moulin Rouge and not one but two Christmas commercials for the UK retailer John Lewis.
Elton stars in sweetest Christmas ad ever
Jamie Bell stars as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin and Bryce Dallas Howard appears as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother, while Richard Madden (Rob Stark from Game of Thrones) assumes the role of manager John Reid.
Interestingly, Reid - known to Australian audiences as a judge on The X Factor in 2005 - was portrayed by another Game of Thrones regular, Aiden Gillen, in Bohemian Rhapsody.
While Rocketman generally nails the hairstyles, fashions and general vibe of its era, the producers appear to have taken some liberties with Elton’s 1984 Sydney wedding to Renate Blauel, dressing the bride in red and the groom in glittery gold leaf.
But a picture from the actual wedding reveals both opted for a very different look.
Rocketman opens in cinemas on May 30.
