Smollett told police he was attacked by two men in the early hours of January 29 after they shouted racist and homophobic slurs at him. Smollett claimed the men beat him, poured bleach on him, and looped a rope around his neck before fleeing on foot.
The 36-year-old could face one to three years in prison if convicted of the felony charge. AP reports the actor may also have to pay for the cost of the investigation.
