Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Africa royal tour day 2 - NEWS.com.au

A classic couple moment between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been caught on camera in South Africa in an unscripted interview with CNN.

The normally tightly-guarded royals are famous for holding press events under the strictest conditions, however the sea air seems to have persuaded the new parents to open up with some breezy comments about the surfing charity, Waves for Change, they had just visited.

Standing near the beach, the Duchess of Sussex took the lead in answering the questions from reporter Max Foster who asked what message they were trying to get across.

“What’s so amazing about being here today is you can see there’s so much good happening in the world and there’s so much positity and all this diversity and inclusivity and the focus is on that,” she said.

“There’s a lot of attention on things that can be a bit troubling in the world but this is actually what’s making a difference and what matters.”

When the microphone is thrust in front of Prince Harry he stumbles over his words before saying: “Exactly what Meghan said.”

He eventually recovers and continues: “What these kids are doing and the coaches are the main thing because they’ve had this unique experience,” he said.

The couple met with young people at the Waves for Change project and saw some of the plastics collected from the ocean at a Commonwealth Litter Project.

Ash Heese, who works for Waves for Change, said the couple also sweetly complemented each other when asked to share their strengths in a large circle.

About Meghan, Ash told Town and Country magazine: “She looked a little bit hesitant so one of our coaches shared that her participation and her energy and her dancing was one of her strengths.”

“She laughed and said no she doesn’t think so, but parenting is a new strength that she and Harry are learning and developing,” Heese explained.

“She said he’s the best dad, and he said she’s the best mum.”

The Duchess of Sussex turned heads at Tuesday’s event by wearing a rare item of clothing for a royal to be spotted in — a denim jacket.

The Madewell jacket is reportedly her favourite denim piece and has been in her wardrobe since 2017. She paired it with a white shirt and black trousers from her own Smart Set range launched earlier this month.

The Duchess also wore sunnies from Le Specs and carried a large tote bag for the second day of their visit. Prince Harry was similarly casually dressed in a dark green long-sleeve shirt, casual grey trousers and Adidas sneakers.

On Tuesday afternoon, Prince Harry, who counts being Captain General of the Royal Marines among his royal duties, will then meet up with members of South Africa’s Maritime Police Unit before rejoining Meghan for a visit to South Africa’s oldest mosque.

The couple’s royal tour kicked off yesterday with the Duchess drawing huge cheers as she delivered a powerful speech Nyanga. Speaking just outside Cape Town on Monday, the 38-year-old Duchess told the audience they were “vital” and “extraordinary”.

“And just on one personal note, may I just say that while I am here with my husband as a member of the royal family, I want you to know that for me I am here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of colour and as your sister,” she said.

During their three days together in Cape Town, the couple will visit social and environmental projects and meet Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, a prominent anti-apartheid activist, as well as faith representatives and young leaders.

Harry will then travel alone to Botswana, Angola and Malawi, where he will do everything from planting trees in a natural reserve and witnessing an anti- poaching exercise to visiting HIV/AIDS projects.

An emotional highlight is expected to come in the Angolan province of Huambo, where he will visit the location of an iconic picture of Princess Diana taken at a de-mining site in 1997, as well as an orthopaedic centre she visited that will be renamed in her honour.

Harry will reunite with Meghan in South Africa on October 1, one day before they wrap up their trip in Johannesburg.

British media have reported that the couple could at some point consider moving to Africa, a continent they are both known to be particularly fond of. Harry took Meghan to Botswana soon after they first met.

“Africa (is) a region of the world that over the past two decades has been a second home to me,” Harry wrote on Instagram a few weeks before the trip, which is their first official tour as a family.

The couple, recently criticised for taking several flights on a private jet, chose to take a commercial flight for this trip.
