Get ready, Swifties: The documentary that Taylor Swift recently teased has officially been announced by Netflix! There’s not much information available, but here’s what we know about the exciting new project.
Taylor Swift is having a great year
Swift has been very busy in 2019. She released four singles off her seventh album, Lover, before its release in August. Swift won Artist of the Decade at the American Music Awards, as well as multiple more awards there. She was nominated for multiple Grammys, and was the third most-streamed female artist on Spotify through the 2010s.
The singer-songwriter is closing out the year (and the decade) strong. She’s headlining the biggest end of the year event, iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball Tour. And her new film, Cats, debuts in Dec. 2019 as well.
A Swift documentary is on the way
Speaking of movies, Swift’s acting career has always been secondary to her musical one. In the past, she appeared in films such as Valentine’s Day and The Giver. Now, she’s been able to combine the two (she sings in and even wrote a song for Cats).
Swift worked with Netflix to release a concert special from her Reputation tour, which came out on Dec. 31, 2018. Now, she has another project in the works — but this one sounds like it will be even more exciting for her fans.
She previously spoke about the new Netflix collaboration
Swift briefly mentioned the Netflix project last month. She took to social media to speak out about her feud with Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta regarding her master recordings.
In her statement, she wrote about performing at the AMAs, adding, “Additionally, – and this isn’t the way I had planned to tell ou this news – Netflix has created a documentary about my life for the past few years.”
She continued, saying that she was “declined the use of [her] older music or performance footage for this project.” Apparently, things have been worked out, so it looks like this will all be OK, despite writing at the time that the project was “a question mark.”
What we’ve recently learned about the project
Now, we have even more details, as well as when the film will first be seen by an audience. Netflix announced Taylor Swift: Miss Americana will premiere as one of its entries in the upcoming 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary was directed by Lana Wilson.
On Twitter, the film is described in more detail: ” A raw and emotionally revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice.”
When will Swift’s documentary be on Netflix?
Those who attend Sundance in Jan. and Feb. 2020 will be very fortunate to get to view the documentary. However, what about the rest of us? Sadly, it may be quite a while before Taylor Swift: Miss Americana is available to view. But once it is, we can at least count on it being accessible worldwide via Netflix.
