It’s official: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding invitations have been sent. The couple is set to wed on May 19 at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. If you’re interested in what the invitations look like, how they were made, and who received one, we have all the answers.
The company making the invitations has been doing so for more than 30 years

The invitations were made by Barnard and Westwood. The company has been using a meticulous process to design and create royal wedding invitations since 1985. The company is based in London and holds a royal warrant — meaning they have the right to display that goods or services of theirs are used by the royal family. There are only about 800 companies and individuals who hold these warrants.

The invitations were dye stamped, not printed

Rather than printing the invitation the way most people do, the royal wedding invitations are dye-stamped. Harry and Meghan’s invitations were done by Lottie Small, a young woman who recently completed her apprenticeship with the company. She used a machine from the 1930s to do the intricate stamping; the machine has been named Maude by the shop’s employees and has been used in dye stamping for years.

They’ll include Prince Charles’ three-feather badge

Besides the names on the invitation, the biggest indication that these are for a royal wedding is the three-feather badge of Prince Charles. The badge consists of three ostrich feathers poking out of a gold coronet. It has been used by the royal family, particularly former princes of Wales, for hundreds of years. Several British sports teams and the British military also use it.

The invitations feature American ink

Although the invitations were created in England by a British company, there is one American thing involved: The ink. The invitations were printed on English card paper using American-made ink. This is a nod to Meghan’s American roots. The bride-to-be has been very understanding of British tradition, but has broken a few of those traditions by incorporating some American touches into her royal wedding.

The colors of the invitation were the simple yet classy gold and black. The colors are somewhat of a tradition and have been used by many royal couples, including Charles and Diana and William and Kate. What’s one significant difference between Harry and Meghan’s invitations and William and Kate’s? William and Kate had theirs sent out as a request to attend by the queen, but Harry and Meghan’s will be a request from Charles.

Quite a few celebrities received an invite

There will be a few famous faces attending the royal wedding. Spice Girl Mel B has confirmed that all five Spice Girls were invited. Elton John also reportedly canceled two Las Vegas shows during that May weekend, indicating that he likely received an invite — he was good friends with Diana. Other stars on the rumored guest list include Serena Williams and actress Priyanka Chopra. Harry has not given word yet on whether President Trump was invited to the wedding.

According to reports, the wedding invitations were mailed out sometime during the week of March 19. But Mel B was talking about her invite as early as late February. Although the invitations were recently leaked, it’s possible that the guests have known about their invites far longer than we have. As for who actually attends the wedding (The Sun reported that Harry’s former flames received an invite), we’ll have to just wait until the couple’s May 19 nuptials.
