How this one photo reveals Kim Kardashian West's genius

At which point, we imagine, a million mothers put down their phones to cry out "Amen!"

Family photos are difficult at the best of times. This is why there is a book called Awkward Family Photos. But you throw a toddler into that steaming casserole of familial artifice and you know you're begging the universe to 1. Ensure it is a dreadful photo and 2. Leave everyone crying.

But Kardashian West did not have to post this type of photo. She could easily have called in all the professionals, at least one wall of white roses, 20 different face tune filters, her makeup artists, and a bag full of candy for the kids, to make it presentable for Instagram.

But the mother of three did not do this.

Instead she chose what is almost a typical stilted family portrait, and shuttled her point home with an honest and funny caption, thereby revealing her genius.

Those who believe that the Kardashian brand is simply about waist-trainers, Valley Girl slang and rich people problems do themselves a disservice. The Kardashian-Jenner-West empire has reached these heights because they preach a message of family unity in all of its messy, annoying, pointless point-scoring and sprawling intimacy.

Yes, there are there are photo shoots and surgical enhancements, but dotted throughout every episode is a callback to babies and sisters and husbands doing what normal people do - screwing up.

And just when we think we could never relate to a woman who is wealthy enough to throw a baby shower that looks more like your average upper-middle class wedding than any kind of pre-natal gathering, we realise this is the same woman who can't get all her kids to pose for a photo when she wants them to. Which is stressful.

And instantly relatable. Suddenly it doesn't matter that her late father defended OJ Simpson before she became best friends with Paris Hilton and made a sex tape upon which she founded her great and heaving fortune, before marrying a man she barely knew for the cameras, and then divorcing him a month later to marry a musician she flew to  Japan last year in her private jet for his birthday because suddenly she's a regular mom.

She's just a mom, just like us, standing in front of a dry shrub, hoping against hope that her kids will behave for the camera, and earning over 5 million likes after she posts it.
