Prince Philip in hospital for planned hip surgery, Buckingham Palace says

Prince Philip has been admitted to hospital for previously scheduled hip surgery, Buckingham Palace says.

The palace said in a statement the Duke of Edinburgh entered King Edward VII Hospital in London on Tuesday afternoon local time, and would have surgery Wednesday.

It said that the hospital admission and surgery were planned ahead of time.

The 96-year-old prince has largely retired from public life, but still accompanies Queen Elizabeth II on occasion.

Prince Philip has missed several public events in recent weeks, including an Easter church service in Windsor.

He has had heart problems in the past.

Last June, he spent two days in hospital as a precautionary measure for the treatment of an infection and he pulled out of another event in March because of ill health, according to British newspaper reports.
