Brooklyn Nine-Nine Finds Its Savior

Brooklyn Nine-Nine will have a sixth season after all, courtesy of the network that passed on it when it first began. Late on Friday night, NBC announced in a tweet that it had picked up the show. “We’ve got your SIX,” the network wrote. This was a last-minute save for the Golden Globe-winning show, which was dropped by Fox on Thursday.

Series creator Mike Schur had initially pitched Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where had a development deal tahnsk to his work on The Office and Parks and Recreation. Based on Friday's statement from Bob Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, that's a decision that still haunts him.

“Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home,” he said. "Mike Schur, Dan Goor, and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC, and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best-cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy lineup. I speak for everyone at NBC, here’s to the Nine-Nine!”

Schur, Nine-Nine’s creator, who worked as a writer on Parks and Recreation throughout its seven-season run, is no stranger to running low-rating but critically acclaimed comedies at NBC. “Being a fan of Parks and Recreation over the past six years has meant loving a show that almost always seemed on the verge of cancellation,” New York magazine wrote near the end of season 7 in 2015.

Though Schur already has another show on NBC, The Good Place, NBC has largely strayed from the kind of low-rated but critically beloved comedies that defined their comedy slate earlier in the decade. Brooklyn Nine Nine's pickup doesn't necessarily mean that's changing; Tina Fey’s Good News, a comedy in the vein of 30 Rock though without the fanbase, was canceled on Friday after two season on the network.

Meanwhile, the other shows axed by Fox this week-- including The Mick, Last Man on Earth, and Lucifer, have yet to find a savior. [#twitter: https://twitter.com/Henderson_Joe/status/995030502661808129]

Lesley Ann Brandt, who plays Mazikeen on Lucifer, posted on Instagram that this show has shaped much of her career and personal life:

“I’ve grown up on this show. Married my husband during season 1, found out I was pregnant on season 2 and had my son season 3. Being your Mazikeen has been so very special to me for so many reasons.”

But as for Schur and his crew? They’re pretty happy.
