Amy Shark's Love Monster debuts at No.1 on ARIA charts

QUEENSLAND singer-songwriter Amy Shark has capped off a huge week by debuting at No.1 on the ARIA album charts with her first album Love Monster, ending Canadian rapper Drake’s two-week run in the top spot.

Shark was presented with the ARIA No.1 plaque backstage at yesterday’s Splendour in the Grass festival at North Byron Parklands, just before the Gold Coast musician’s performance on the main stage.

Shark said receiving the news that she had snared the No.1 spot just before she was due to make her main stage debut at the festival would make the moment all the more memorable.

“I never in a million years would have ever thought I’d have a number one album,” she told The Sunday Mail exclusively before her performance.

“I tried not to put this big expectation on myself. I definitely think the album is worth it, and that’s just me being biased.

“If I didn’t get number one I was never going to throw myself on the ground and have a hissy fit, but it is such a beautiful way to end this adventure of putting this album together, playing main stage at this amazing festival.”

Shark first played Splendour in the Grass last year, and prior to yesterday’s performance told The Sunday Mail she recalled being shocked by the turnout for her set at the smaller G.W. McLennan Stage at the 2017 event.

“It wasn’t the latest timeslot, and the tent was heaving and it was such an amazing feeling,” she recalled.

“That’s what every artist wants to see, is everyone just so happy to see you, it just makes you want to put on the best show possible.

“I’m really lucky to do it a second year, and I’ve got new songs that people are hopefully enjoying.

”It’s going to be a special moment, especially to be on the main stage – I’ve never played a main stage, I don’t think.”

Shark admitted to still having “the right amount of nerves” before her performance, but said scoring the No.1 had given her extra confidence.

“People are obviously liking the album, that’s obvious now, so I’m going out there thinking people are wanting to hear this – I’m so pumped,” she said.

Asked how she planned to celebrate the achievement — which follows a gruelling few weeks of promotional duties — Shark said she was planning to “chill out and have some drinks, hang out with my team and my man and celebrate this album, finally.”

Sony Australia and New Zealand chief executive Dennis Handlin said he was “absolutely thrilled” for Shark’s success.

Love Monster is an incredible body of work that showcases Amy’s extraordinary talent,” he said.

“I couldn’t be more proud – she is an incredible storyteller, an outstanding musician and a beautiful person.”
