It's episode two of Bride and Prejudice and the drama is set to continue tonight as we meet the remaining three couples.
First up are Ry and Philippa, a madly-in-love couple. The only catch is, Ry is 21, and Philippa is 39. To spare you the calculations, that means there are eighteen years between them. Ry says his mum accepts their relationship, and that Phillippa even sometimes gets along with his mum better than she does with him. However, Philippa's parents aren't so accepting. "When people say age is just a number, I think they're living in a dream," says Philippa's mum, Gunilla. Philippa's dad sums up his thoughts on the relationship by saying "I hate it." Well, got to admire that directness. Both parents fear Ry is a gold-digger, which sounds straight out of a Kanye West song.
Next up are Melissa and Aalden, who have six years and two kids between them — their son and Melissa's daughter from a previous relationship. Despite seeming like a picture-perfect family, Aalden has struggled with a gambling addiction and has also repeatedly cheated on Melissa. Uh oh. Melissa says she has been able to forgive Aalden for his indiscretions, and that they're stronger and happier than ever. However, Melissa's mum and sister aren't so positive. In fact, her sister Rachel starts off by saying that Aalden is a loser and that she thinks, "once a cheater, always a cheater." Melissa just wants her family to move on, like she has, but sounds like that's going to be easier said than done.
Lastly, we meet Izzy and Simon. In a similar story to Melissa and Aalden, they're super loved up, but Simon has a history of infidelity. While Simon frames it as "[making] a lot of really poor decisions," Izzy interjects with "he means sleeping with a bunch of girls." Talk about awks. On top of that, he's also had issues with alcohol abuse. However, he's been sober for almost a year and Izzy decided to give him another shot. This is much to the disgust of Izzy's mum Bobbi and best friend Amanda, with Bobbi describing him as a "narcissistic sociopath." Whoa, tell us how you really feel Bobbi! Amanda is similarly frank, calling him "king of the trash." Izzy says she doesn't know what she'll do if they can't accept her intention to marry Simon, but it seems like she shouldn't hold her breath.
It's now time for the couples to reveal their marriage plans to their families and Izzy and Simon are up first. Bobbi's first reaction to the news is "you can't be serious," which certainly doesn't sound promising. Izzy tears up almost immediately, and this is certainly tense viewing. Bobbi points out that Izzy could hardly even leave her bed due to how Simon formally treated her and that he "broke her." Simon says he's changed, and that he wants them to let him show them he is. Bobbi tells Simon he's got a long way to go before he's deserving of being with Izzy. She says she really hopes Izzy doesn't go through with the wedding, and it's safe to say this probably isn't going to end well.
Next are Ry and Philippa, and her parents say they are keen to help Phillipa "stop acting like a teenager." Somehow, I don't think they're prepared for what they're about to hear. Philippa tells them they are engaged, and her dad responds by congratulating her on the "new child" in her family. Wowsa, he certainly isn't holding back! Philippa urges them to see how happy Ry makes her and to move forward together with them. But when Ry asks them if they'll come to the wedding, they can't give him an answer. Behind his back, they say they're hoping for the wedding to be cancelled. Looks like this one's going to be a bumpy ride!
The last couple up is Melissa and Aalden. Melissa's mum Jill asks why on earth they think they're ready for marriage, considering what a roller coaster the last six years have been. Melissa responds by pointing out how long they've loved each other for now, which seems like a fair point. Jill retaliates that they don't seem ready for the hard work of marriage, and Rachel straight out says she not only doesn't support the wedding but their relationship full stop. "I've got huge alarm bells. . . you will realise a ring on your finger isn't going to make this any better" says Jill. Aalden says he's determined to prove he's a good father, and that we will be a good husband, and points out he's working on his issues. However, Jill says it's a "really, really big ask" for them to support the marriage. Seems like this one's going to end in tears.
In tomorrow night's episode, the couples will continue to confront their families, and no doubt it will be dramatic, to say the least.
