'We've hit a ceiling': Nick Cummins crushes unsuspecting bachelorette

The Bachelor episode on Wednesday is the hometown dates, so you best believe we're at the pointy end of things.

Feelings are on the line, and the bachelorettes' sceptical families aren't interested in seeing their loved ones get hurt.

Which of course means Nick Cummins was in the firing line multiple times.

And yes, it was as enjoyable as it sounds.

Think quick, Nick.

Think quick, Nick.

We start off with Cass' hometown date in Sydney's Avalon, and we know this is a big moment for 23-year-old Cass, who dated Cummins before the show and has had feelings for him ever since.

After a horse riding date and an underwhelming amount of interaction from Cummins, the pair heads off to meet Cass' mum, dad, brother and sister.

Her mum is an absolute treat and isn't backwards in coming forward about Cass' feelings for Cummins, bringing them up multiple times and thoroughly (and hilariously!) embarrassing her daughter.

When Cass' older sister later takes Cummins aside for a more serious chat, she attempts to ascertain if he has genuine feelings for Cass.

Things felt a little flat between Cass and Cummins on their date.

Things felt a little flat between Cass and Cummins on their date.

His answer? The worst effort in the world:

"If I end up with Cassie, there's no doubt feelings would skyrocket," he says, which clears up absolutely nothing.

The rest of the dinner goes relatively smoothly, and at the end Cass' mum gives the Bachelor a bag of homemade cookies to take with him.

It would all be so sweet and wholesome but... you can really tell now that Cummins is not interested in Cass.

He remains relatively mute right until the end of their date, seemingly terrified that simple communication might come across as encouragement for the lovelorn bachelorette.

Saying her heart will be shattered if she is eliminiated, Cass tears up as Nick gives Brittany a rose over her.

Next stop, Perth - for a date with Brooke and her loved ones.

Cummins is introduced to Brooke's best friend Tess, her father figure Peter, and her brother Troy.

Straight up, Tess is no fool.

God, she's good value.

Brooke's best mate Tess couldn't have been less impressed with Cummins.

Brooke's best mate Tess couldn't have been less impressed with Cummins.

She pulls no punches in her assessment of Cummins' smooth-talking ways and seems completely unimpressed by his charm throughout their whole meal.

"Nick's prepared for all the questions," Tess surmises. "He's obviously got it in his head what he wants to say, and what we all want to hear."

When their date comes to a close, Brooke lets Cummins in on her feelings for him.

"I am falling for you, massively," she says. "Just seeing you with my family gives me that clarity of how special you are to me."

He L-O-V-E-S hearing all that and gives her a dirty ol' pash on the porch, which is followed by a piece-to-camera in which he muses about her feelings and expresses concern that he might end up breaking her heart.

Way to flip the switch on us, Cummins.

Then, he's off to Moreton Bay in Queensland, where Sophie's waiting.

Cummins fits in well with Sophie's family, but her sisters weren't afraid to ask a few curly Qs.

Cummins fits in well with Sophie's family, but her sisters weren't afraid to ask a few curly Qs.

"I really like Soph because she's a classic Aussie bird," he says. Pure poetry.

He greets her with a giant hug and kiss and tells her she looks "tippy-top". (He thinks Sophie's hot, had you noticed?) They go jet-skiing and as usual, have a blast.

Also as usual: Cummins can't keep his hands off the woman.

Later, at her family's place, the conversation flows.

Cummins clearly fits in really well with Sophie's family, and it makes for a relatively easy night for our Bachelor.

At the end of their date, Sophie tries to convince herself to tell Cummins how she really feels, but she can't do it - and, look, fair enough.

"I'm just so scared of being heartbroken," she says to the camera.

"At the end of this, Nick's only going to pick one person so I'm going to be a realist and protect myself."

If we could insert the clapping hands emoji, we would.

Finally, Cummins hits Port Macquarie for his date with Brittany, where, after a romantic and affectionate date, he meets her mum, dad, brother and sister.

Brittany's dad didn't make it easy for Cummins.

Honey Badger gets all of two seconds to settle in before her dad Tony whisks him off for "a bit of a yarn". The way he says it, you just know Cummins is in for a hard time.

Tony tells Cummins he doesn't "have a great deal of respect for football players in terms of their relationship with women", and when Cummins tries to explain his predicament in having four women to think about, Tony wants none of it.

"That's all well and good but I'm not particularly worried about those [women]," he says.

"I've got my daughter to worry about, she's my primary concern.

"You break her heart, I'm going to be the one to pick up the pieces. I've got no desire to see her come close to that again."

Later, Brittany's sister asks Cummins about his pre-existing relationship with Cass, and questions his authenticity.

When she tells Brittany that Cummins and Cass' relationship goes deeper than the other bachelorettes realise, Brittany becomes upset and confronts Cummins.

He admits to Brittany that he went on three dates with Cass and that they kissed - but denies they were ever in an official relationship. Their date ends on a somewhat sour note, with Brittany clearly conflicted over what she's learned.

Brittany was not messing about at the cocktail party.

At the cocktail party later on, Brittany asks Cass why she wasn't honest about her relationship with Cummins.

Cass explains that she was trying to avoid hurting the other bachelorettes, and breaks down as Brittany pushes for details.

"Were you staying together?" Brittany asks, after Cass admits to kissing Cummins.

"This is really inappropriate, Britt," Cass replies through tears.

"It just seems like there's more going on to this story," Britt replies.

"I don't even know what to say. I'm sorry," Cass says. "We've just been mates since last year."

"OK, that's all we need to talk about," Brittany says.

It's been a tense few moments, so when they hug, you can almost feel Cass' relief through the TV.

Unfortunately for her, it's short-lived.

When she doesn't get a rose at the end of the ensuing ceremony, it caps off what has turned out to be a pretty terrible night for sweet Cass, who's instantly in tears. Cummins walks her outside.

"I just can't believe it," Cass says as she leaves. "I've had my heart broken."

"I just can't believe it," Cass says as she leaves. "I've had my heart broken."

"Cass," he starts. "We had the best time, all right? It's not because we don't get along like a house on fire - we do. We do. And I've loved every minute, I have.

"You're an amazing woman and your smile lights up the room. But I feel at this moment now, we've just hit a ceiling on this."

Then, as Cass gets in the car to leave, Cummins utters the words no one wants to hear from a love interest: "I hope we can still be friends."

Ouch.
