Netflix drops trailer for The Kominsky Method

COMEDY super producer Chuck Lorre is known for a specific kind of TV show.

He’s made gazillions putting to air crowd-pleasing broad comedies with laugh tracks, predictable jokes and multi-camera setups.

So fans of his work — The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly, Dharma & Greg, Mom — might be surprised to see his new show is quite different.

For one, it’s been made for Netflix rather than a broadcast network, which means there is (heavens forfend!) swearing — someone certainly drops the “sh*t” in the first trailer the streamer has just released.

Starring legends Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method is about two friends who spend a lot of time grumbling about being old in a city, Los Angeles, where everyone is obsessed with youth.

Douglas plays the title character, a former actor who’s now a well-regarded acting coach while Arkin’s character, Norman, has to deal with an adult daughter with substance abuse problems.

The series also stars Nancy Travis and Sarah Baker with guest spots from Lisa Edelstein, Danny DeVito and Susan Sullivan.

The biggest departure from Lorre’s usual schtick is that The Kominsky Method is what those in the industry call a single-camera series. Essentially it is what it sounds like, that it’s shot with a one-camera set-up (like movies, drama series and most comedies in 2018) — this translates to a more dynamic aesthetic with lots of close-ups, medium shots and location shots.

In contrast, multi-cam comedies tend to be filmed on a set, often with a studio audience and mostly consisting of wide and medium shots, which gives it that static energy.

The Kominsky Method drops on Netflix on November 16.
