'I don't think I can read it': Dave Hughes reduced to tears on radio by heartwarming message about his late father... and ...

Earlier this week, Dave Hughes, 47, made the heartfelt admission on Hughesy, We Have A Problem that he and late father Desmond 'didn't say they loved each other very often'.

And after receiving a touching message from a nurse who had cared for his dad before he passed away in November 2010, Dave became emotional on his radio show, Hughesy & Kate.

As co-host Kate Langbroek urged him to read out the message on Wednesday, the comedian was reduced to tears by its words.

'I had a direct message on Instagram that made me cry,'  Dave explained. 'And made my mother cry.

'I don’t think I can read it,' Dave continued before beginning to read the stirring message.

The radio star got just a few words into the message, saying '"Hey Dave, watching the show. I nursed your dad at Mercy" ... nah I can’t read it' before beginning to cry.

He continued: 'I can’t read it, I can’t read it. This is embarrassing.'

However, he managed to finish reading the message and admitted: 'When I showed that message to my mum earlier today she was very emotional.'

The nurse who sent the message had cared for Desmond in hospital before his death in November 2010 and reached out to the comedian on social media this week.

Dave later shared the nurse's heartwarming message with his followers and was clearly touched by their kind words.

Dave wrote on Instagram: 'Talked about how me and dad didn't say we loved each other very often on my TV show tonight and got this message. Nurses are the best.'

The direct message from the nurse read: 'Hey Dave watching the show. I nursed your dad at Mercy and he loved his family so much.

'He would often speak of you as kids. You definitely have his humour. A real gentleman who was proud of his kids.

'Love the show and yes I live in Warrny (Warrnambool),' they concluded.

Dave spoke about his father Desmond's death from cancer aged 78 in an interview with the Herald Sun back in 2010.

Shortly before passing away, the Hughesy & Kate host told his dad - who was also suffering from dementia - that he loved him and appreciated everything he had done for the family.

'You don't tell people you love them because it's embarrassing to say it. Or tell people you value what they did for you. So I did that very late,' he confessed. 'I think he heard me.'

Dave added: 'We come from a place where you just don't use those words very often. Your parents show it through their actions. It sounds soft or something... but that's ridiculous.'

Speaking of how his relationship with his father had improved after his turbulent youth, Dave added: 'Even though we didn't communicate that much, the fact that I worked hard made him proud.'
