Matt Damon is so fed up with living in Trump’s America that he’s considering moving him and his family all the way to Australia just to get away from it.
Sydney’sThe Daily Telegraph reports that Damon, 47, has already purchased property in Byron Bay, New South Wales. Page Six reports that the home is next door to a home owned by Chris Hemsworth, a.k.a. Thor. Must be nice to be privileged and rich enough to be able to just escape all your problems by buying a house somewhere else.
A source says “Matt’s telling friends and colleagues in Hollywood that he’s moving the family to Australia” because he disagrees with Trump’s policies.
“Matt’s saying the move will not impact his work—as he will travel to wherever his projects are shooting,” the source continued. In any case, Damon doesn’t have all that many projects in the works. He is set to appear in a cameo in the upcoming Ocean’s 8 movie, but filming on that has already wrapped. He is also producing a film version of one of Agatha Christie’s stories, Witness for the Prosecution, which will star Damon’s buddy Ben Affleck.
“He’s also telling friends he wants to have a safe place to raise his kids,” the Page Six source claims. Damon has four children with wife Luciana Barroso.
Damon was in the news quite a few times towards the end of last year after he repeatedly failed to truly understand the impact of his words about the burgeoning #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. In one interview, he attempted to make a nuanced argument about how the world reacts to sexual assault allegations, but he instead suggested that only some people should be punished for sexual assault. If they’d made good work that he personally admired, like Louis C.K., then Damon thought they should be off the hook. In a separate interview, Damon put his foot in his mouth again as he argued that men who don’t sexually assault or harass women—in other words, men who are doing the absolute bare minimum—should be praised more.
Since then, Damon has acknowledged his mistakes and pledged to “get in the backset and close my mouth for awhile,” a welcome change. In addition, Damon and buddy Affleck have both recently announced they will commit to including inclusion riders for all productions made by their company, Pearl Street Films.
